The National Biosafety management agency has raised the alert over tons of genetically modified maize imported into the country without necessary government approval
Director general of the agency, Rufus Egbegba said that the agency got notice of the importation through an intelligence report and has set in motion necessary machineries to track the importers and bring them to book
He however called on Nigerians not to panic, as the agency would never compromise on its mandate of ensuring that the safety of Nigerians and the environment is priority
The national biosafety management act 2015 stipulates steps and procedures for the importation, production, processing of genetically modified organisms in the country, thereby empowering the agency to carry out risk assessment of products before they are allowed into the Nigerian market
